As Americans gather to celebrate this week, we show our gratitude for themany blessings in our lives. We are grateful for our friends and families whofill our lives with purpose and love. We're grateful for our beautiful country, and for the prosperity we enjoy. We're grateful for the chance to live, work andworship in freedom. And in this Thanksgiving week, we offer thanks and praise tothe provider of all these gifts, Almighty God.

We also recognize our duty to share our blessings with the least among us.Throughout the holiday season, schools, churches, synagogues and other generousorganizations gather food and clothing for their neighbors in need. Many youngpeople give part of their holiday to volunteer at homeless shelters or foodpantries. On Thanksgiving, and on every day of the year, America is a morehopeful nation because of the volunteers who serve the weak and thevulnerable.

The Thanksgiving tradition of compassion and humility dates back to theearliest days of our society. And through the years, our deepest gratitude hasoften been inspired by the most difficult times. Almost four centuries ago, thepilgrims set aside time to thank God after suffering through a bitter winter.George Washington held Thanksgiving during a trying stay at Valley Forge. AndPresident Lincoln revived the Thanksgiving tradition in the midst of a civilwar.

The past year has brought many challenges to our nation, and Americans havemet every one with energy, optimism and faith. After lifting our economy from arecession, manufacturers and entrepreneurs are creating s again. Volunteers fromacross the country came together to help hurricane victims rebuild. And when thechildren of Beslan, Russia suffered a brutal terrorist attack, the world sawAmerica's generous heart in an outpouring of compassion and relief.

The greatest challenges of our time have come to the men and women whoprotect our nation. We're fortunate to have dedicated firefighters and policeofficers to keep our streets safe. We're grateful for the homeland security andintelligence personnel who spend long hours on faithful watch. And we givethanks to the men and women of our military who are serving with courage andskill, and making our entire nation proud.

Kipling said:“East is east, and west is west, and never the twain shallmeet!” But now, a century later, they have met.

They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in thearts. Some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choicebetween east and west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creativecombination of both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technologyour own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it ourown.

I love Beijing and Hennan opera because it always reminds me of who I am.But I am also a fan of pop music, especially English songs. So I have combinedeastern melody with western language. It is called western henna opera.

When two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do notfit into the tradition of the other. When this happens, we need to learn tounderstand and respect the customs of another culture. Then there are certainthings some people may not like. To this, I will say, if you do not like it,please try to tolerate it. To learn to tolerate what you personally don’t likeis a great virtue at a time when different cultures mix and merge. Before us,there are two rivers, eastern and western cultures. At present, they may run indifferent courses. But eventually, they will converge into the vast sea of humanculture.

Right now, I can see peoples of eastern and western cultures, standing sideby side, singing the Olympic theme song: we are hand in hand, heart to heart, together we will shape a beautiful tomorrow! Thank you!

Someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of abook, whose pages are infinite”. i don’t know who wrote these words, but i’vealways liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it tobe. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reapa good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

We are young. “how to spend the youth?” it is a meaningful question. toanswer it, first i have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” youthis not a time of life, it’s a state of mind. it’s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. it’s the matter of the will. it’s the freshness of thedeep spring of life.

A poet said “to see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. severaldays ago, i had a chance to listen to a lecture. i learnt a lot there. i’d liketo share it with all of you. let’s show our right palms. we can see three linesthat show how our love.career and life is. i have a short line of life. whatabout yours? i wondered whether we could see our future in this way. well, let’smake a fist. where is our future? where is our love, career, and life? tellme.yeah, it is in our hands. it is held in ourselves.

We all want the future to be better than the past. but the future can gobetter itself. don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. from thepast, we’ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. we’ve learnt thatwe can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. failure doesn’tmean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way.failure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.

As what i said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of thefirst chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. the past has gone. nothingwe do will change it. but the future is in front of us. believe that what wegive to the world, the world will give to us. and from today on, let’s be theowners of ourselves, and speak out “we are the world, we are the future.”

It is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. ButI believe that success is not external. I believe that success comes fromwithin. My definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true toothers. That means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the faceof adversity. I also believe that success is not discriminatory. Success is notrestricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any personirrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. A good exampleof success is that of Beethoven. He is one of the world's most famous composers, yet he was deaf. He could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created.Yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals''that ofcomposing music.

To exemplify what success means to me, I pose a question to all of you. What brings us together here today? I believe that it is the beauty of thespoken word. The effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to thespoken word. I believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for thosewho have difficulty in expressing themselves. These people are reclusive and hadtheir emotions hidden within them. I once went to Australia and I saw twopictures, Once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child withsocial inhibitions. The picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain. The other was life'like, full of details and imagination. What this shows isthat these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in thesechildren.

My ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words tothese children. These children have been neglected, but I feel that I can andshould help these children to find themselves and be able to expressthemselves.

I realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles onthe way. But I believe in my ideals and I will stick to them''even in the faceof adversity. We should never have a premature abortion of ideals'let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge. For a life without ideals is notliving.

Thank you!
