1、用than來表示比較的意義，當你將一個名詞（東西、人、地方或概念）在各種方面與另一個相比較時，就用than。例句1：There are more onions than scallions in your fridge.冰箱裡的洋蔥比青蔥多。

例句2：Scott was sicker than a dog last week.上週斯科特簡直比狗還虛弱。

2、用then來表示時間先後順序。例句1：First there were four, and then there were two. 首先有四個，然後變成兩個了。

Wash the clothes, then put them in the dryer.先洗衣服，然後再放到烘乾機裡。

3、兩個詞的發音稍有不同。than和then都有滑母音，並且相似。從語音學的角度來講，英語為母語的人喜歡發?這一非中央原因，就像口腔放鬆時發出的聲音"eh"一樣，因為這樣更方便，也能讓語流過渡更快更自然。但結果就是，很多"a"和"e"的音就越難區分開了。發Than的時候，口腔打得更開，舌頭置於底部頂住下齒。從口腔後部和喉嚨發出來的母音會稍微有被阻擋的感覺。

發Then的時候嘴張開一半就行，發音時喉嚨和舌頭都處於放鬆狀態。

4、檢測你的使用情況，在造句的時候問問自己這些問題。用next代替then，檢驗句子是否有意義？I will go to the store next是我接下來去商店的意思，所以這裡可以用then：I will go to the store then.

I like apples better next papayas 這句話語義不通，所以應該使用than：I like apples better than papayas.（比起木瓜我更喜歡蘋果。）

用in comparison to 來代替than，看看句子通不通。句子It costs more in comparison to a new car的語意通順，意思是這比買輛新車錢花得更多，所以可以用than：It costs more than a new car.

而這個句子You'll never guess what happened to me in comparison to 卻講不通，所以你可能要用到then： You'll never guess what happened to me then!（你永遠猜不到當時發生了什麼。）

5、學會辨認錯誤的使用例子，從錯誤中學習。錯例:I'm a better speller then you! （意思本是：我比你更擅長拼字。）

錯例: I feel that astrophysics is less interesting then horticulture. （意思本是：我覺得園藝學比天體物理學更有意思。）

錯例: She is going to stop to get snacks, than we'll go to the library together. （意思本是：她打算先去買點零食，然後我們再一起去圖書館。）

錯例: Our parents used to go out to eat every now and than. （意思本是：我們父母過去常常在外面吃飯。）

更簡單的記憶方法是，then是表時間的，所以和when一樣母音是e。

另一種記憶方法是then和when都有e，而than和comparison都有a。

人們更容易誤用then，上面所舉的than的錯誤例子都很荒謬，而then的錯例則不那麼容易被發現。所以要更注意then的使用。

than也可以用於時間先後，如: "Paul was later than Mary." 這裡用in comparison to 來檢驗句子是念得通的，所以than在這裡使用正確，和表時間的詞later一起表示比……晚。
