The Tibetan antelope, the so-called plateau spirit, lives in the uninhabited Kekexili region in Tibet and is listed in China as a class one rare wild animal.

Fifty years ago, there were about one million Tibetan antelopes in Kekexili but they have been brought to the brink of extinction by years of poaching.

From 1990 to 1998, about 20,000 Tibetan antelopes were shot. Tibetan antelope products sell for a high price in the international market. The price tag for a Tibetan antelope shawl ranges from US$11,000 to US$40,000.

There are now only about 50,000 Tibetan antelopes left. The Chinese authorities took action against the illegal hunting in 1999.

There are now natural protection zones staffed with people to look after the animals. These efforts appear to be helping as Tibetan antelopes can now be seen along the Qinghai-Tibet highways.

藏羚（Pantholops hodgsoni）

藏羚（Pantholops hodgsoni）屬牛科、藏羚屬，別名：藏羚羊、長角羊、羚羊，主要分佈在中國青海、西藏、新疆三省區，現存種群數量約在7—10萬隻。由於藏羚獨特的棲息環境和生活習性，目前全世界還沒有一個動物園或其它地方人工飼養過藏羚，而對於這一物種的生活習性等有關的科學研究工作也開展甚少。

藏羚是中國青藏高原的特有動物、國家一級保護動物， 也

是列入《瀕危野生動植物種國際貿易公約》（CITES）中嚴禁進行貿易活動的瀕危動物。藏羚羊一般體長 135 釐米，肩高 80 釐米，體重達 45-60 千克。形體健壯，頭形寬長，吻部粗壯。雄性角長而直，烏黑髮亮，雌性無角。鼻部寬闊略隆起，尾短，四肢強健而勻稱。全身除臉頰、四肢下部以及尾外，其餘各處被毛豐厚絨密，通體淡褐色。

它生活於青藏高原88萬平方公里的廣袤地域內，棲息在 4000 - 5300 米的高原荒漠、冰原凍土地帶及湖泊沼澤周圍，藏北羌塘、青海可可西里以及新疆阿爾金山一帶令人類望而生畏的“生命禁區”，藏羚特別喜歡在有水源的草灘上活動，群居生活在高原荒漠、冰原凍土地帶及湖泊沼澤周圍。那些盡是些“不毛之地”，植被稀疏，只能生長針茅草、苔蘚和地衣之類的低等植物，而這些卻是藏羚羊賴以生存的美味佳餚；那裡湖泊雖多，絕大部分是鹹水湖，藏羚羊成為偶蹄類動物中的佼佼者，不僅體形優美、性格剛強、動作敏捷，而且耐高寒、抗缺氧。在那十分險惡的地方，時時閃現著藏羚羊鮮活的生命色彩、騰越的矯健身姿，它們真是生命力極其頑強的生靈！它性怯懦機警，聽覺和視覺發達，常出沒在人跡罕至的地方，極難接近。有長距離遷移現象。平時雌雄分群活動，一般 2-6 只或 10 餘隻結成小群，或數百隻以上大群。食物以禾本科和莎草科植物為主。發情期為冬末春初，雄性間有激烈的爭雌現象，1 只雄羊可帶領幾隻雌羊組成一個家庭，6-8 月份產仔，每胎 1 仔。

經過千萬年自然演變，它們與冰雪為伴，以嚴寒為友，自由自在地生息在世界屋脊之上。然而，然而由於一些所謂貴族對對被稱為“羊絨之王”的藏羚羊羊絨——“沙圖什”的需求，藏羚羊的棲息地正在變成一個屠宰場，每年數以萬隻的藏羚被非法偷獵者捕殺！昔日茫茫高原上數萬只藏羚一起奔跑的壯觀景象，如今再也見不到了。
